Behind the scene, we have built up a new studio and been churning on a slew of jams that will be released this summer officially re-launching Solid Bump (including vinyl finally!!!).

Leading up to this, I hope to post up some video scenes from the new studio with little tastes of the new material as we do the final recordings.

For now, check out these couple tips and tricks I found on Synthmania. The gear and techniques used is semi-similar to  parts of our revamped studio. Our Nerd Alert columns were some of our most popular – so maybe some of you will be into these.

As stated in the last post from a few months ago, it is seemingly quiet on the home front of SBR. And in some regards that is correct. In the last few months Clay and Eric of White Girl Lust have shifted their attention temporarily off of Solid Bump to really invest in their own music again. Running even the smallest label in a total DIY fashion is a time consuming endeavor.

Last summer we found ourselves more inspired to work on music than we had been in a long time. We had reinvested in some of our favorite classic synths and drum machines, rebuilt a new studio space, and found ourselves really inspired by the dance music scene as a whole in 2011.

Now six months later this inspiration is finally culminating as Say Again with long time collaborator Alona Esposito. We have our first EP of demos wrapping up which will lead into an official launch of Say Again in late winter 2012.

However, the first fruits of our labor are actually being released in only a few weeks on the notorious Gomma Records. The remix package is of Moullinex’s Modular Jam and features some great works from the likes of Justin Faust, Earl Grey (an alias of Danny from the C-90s), Worship, and ourselves as Say Again. 

Our mix digs it’s heel in a tad deeper into the house and exposes our penchant for 80′s Roland gear and 12 bit drum samplers. We are pretty excited about this one!

Where have White Girl Lust and Solid Bump Records been the last few months? Well, it’s been a hectic whirlwind of a good time, settling into a new studio space, rebuilding our collection of vintage studio toys, and mostly writing a slew of demos for a new project that will be unveiled this fall under the moniker Say Again.

Who or what is Say Again? Eric and Clayton of WGL have officially joined up with long-time collaborator Alona to focus on rolling out a shared vision of lush analog driven dance music.

As a warm up exercise the trio has cooked up a moody interpretation of Tensnake’s recent anthem “Something About You”.The remix plays up the rich orchestration of the original’s classic house vibes and settles with a distinctly modern house groove.

More to follow in the coming months – but for now – enjoy a small tease of Say Again.

Heavy production from all at solid bump in the month of March. Here is the proof! Check out the recent post at Lazy Day Lounge featuring Chicago’s Gary Shruggs aka “Adulture” as he gives a peak into his personal production methods. It’s a world of cats, cigarettes, and rotosound flat wound bass strings all contributing to the sultry disco funk that Adulture is known for producing.

Got alerted yesterday that the White Girl Lust remix of Diamond Lights “What Have You” (Yes Yes Records) keeps appearing in some surprising (but welcomed) places. This time on Heavyfeet’s Winter Promo Mix. Check it on out!

One of White Girl Lust’s favorite releases of summer was Robert James’ moody yet enticingly funky Sleep Modes EP on Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations label. The imprint’s short but distinct discography is concise and focused in an amazing way.

RJ’s latest mix is a great example of the label’s sound. Reserved boom-bap house beats that lean heavy on samples, yet in a almost dismissive manner. The backbone of most tracks is the bassline and reverbed subtleties which evoke a eighties vibe, while clearly sounding new and cutting edge.

Highly recommended on all counts.

Sammy Bananas shows his way around his lovely little studio in this Pro Audio Store vlog (or whatever you kids call ‘em these days). If you notice, the main theme is none other than his “Paper Cat” remix. Big up the sax man.

Normally we are pretty strategic in out post but… this live set from the beloved Danilo Plessow project – Motor City Drum Ensemble  just came to our attention. LISTEN. It’s that simple. Best there is at the moment.

When I posted a link to the last Nerd Alert on the Erol Alkan forum, the thread got a surprise contributor from Mike Mind of the infamous Turbo label. He chimed in with a very helpful and well thought out response and I think it really closes up this chapter of Nerd Alert.

On an additional side note, Mike recently did a stellar remix for Nacho Lovers new single “Deeper” – which is available now on Fools Gold and highly recommended. Buy it on Beatport.

As someone that does this for Turbo, here are my tips:

1. bcc / cc? don’t do it. If you want a label to listen to your demo, make it look like you’re sending it to them individually. If I don’t see my / our address in the to: field, but the artist’s own email address, i know they just sent this out to a massive list.

2. keep your biographical info to a minimum. you don’t have to include your resumé, or a list of semi-famous djs that support the unreleased demo. if we like what we hear, we’ll do our research.

3. tell us where your from. oddly enough, it peaks curiosity. we get a lot of demos that start with ‘greetings from italy!’ usually these end up being pretty good, and even if the rest of the email seems dodgy, i still end up clicking on the link. that said, if you try to trick us by faking that you’re from italy, we’ll find out!

4. NEVER say ‘i think this would be perfect for your label’. rarely do demos that start with that message end up being perfect or fit with what we do. let the label decide whether it’s perfect or not. worst case scenario, we remember you as the person that has no idea what they’re talking about.

5. following up on a demo submission: if you send a demo email, some of the time people will listen and not respond because they’re not interested, or don’t want to say something embarrassing about your work. if you follow up, the best way to do it, is “hi ____, a few weeks ago, i sent you a link to some of my tunes. here’s the link again in case you didn’t get a chance to listen to it. thanks!” Constant pestering will only make a label not want to work with you, but a polite follow up email is fine.

6. don’t be discouraged if a label passes on your tracks. if the a&r people think you have potential, but the tracks you sent aren’t good enough, they’ll remember and open your future emails.

7. don’t send everything you’ve ever made. pick your best 2 or 3 tracks and keep it to that. if the label wants to hear more, they’ll ask. often, if we’re on the fence about an artist, it’s a mediocre extra tracks included in the submission that ends up being the dealbreaker. if you only have one oustanding track, just send that. you don’t need to pad the submission.

8. lastly, almost as important as the music is being polite, humble, and otherwise coming across as someone that seems like they’d be great to work with. when a label invests in an artist, they’re investing in a potential long term relationship. start off on the right foot.

These internets are a wild place. Oh, the people you meet and random e-buddies you make. Toronto’s Mix Chopin is one such person – and he happens to be a stellar up & coming producer/DJ.
