Quinten 909 – Thriller Febuary Mix (New WGL track inc.)

I am certain we have spoke on Quinten 909 at some point on here. Dude is a very talented young producer and from the track selection of this mix, he has some fine taste in other people’s music as well.

This is also the first preview of the forthcoming White Girl Lust tune from Pleasure & Pressure Vol.3 – check the 16:20 mark for the exxxclusive.

Treasure Fingers Defected Mix (feat. GOV & Bit Funk)

Without a doubt Treasure Fingers is one of the most visible figures in the broad definition of disco house. It’s pretty clear that the mega-dance label Defected is making a strong move to cash in on the scene, with recent tracks from Tensnake and Treasure Fingers, as well as some of the affiliate SBR posse (shhhh – details are secret). This is a good thing no matter how you throw the dice for small labels like us.

A sign of this has been the inclusion of Bit Funk’s remix of Ghosts of Venice’s recent single “Her” on Solid Bump. Below is the radio show from a few weeks ago. The SBR blog has been a bit heavy on mixes lately, however this is a much different vibe of a mix than the epic Robert James mix from yesterday. It’s good to keep a diverse dance music palette y’all.

Robert James – No Season Mix

One of White Girl Lust’s favorite releases of summer was Robert James’ moody yet enticingly funky Sleep Modes EP on Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations label. The imprint’s short but distinct discography is concise and focused in an amazing way.

RJ’s latest mix is a great example of the label’s sound. Reserved boom-bap house beats that lean heavy on samples, yet in a almost dismissive manner. The backbone of most tracks is the bassline and reverbed subtleties which evoke a eighties vibe, while clearly sounding new and cutting edge.

Highly recommended on all counts.

Dimitri (of Paris) Does Disco Mix

Dimitri has been doing the disco thing (regardless of trends) since the early 90′s. To be completely frank he had kind of fallen off my radar until Niles Rodgers (yes, THAT Niles Rodgers) announced on twitter the pending release of the Chic box set. He mentioned that Dimiti had done a couple edits of the band’s tunes and linked to the Parisian’s soundcloud. Here I found a goldmine of top notch edits and a few mixes.

You could spend all day on his page, so let’s start with a general mix.

Todd Edwards, White Girl Lust, Rock It Science @ Temple SF – 09/17/10

I was honored to get a last minute offer to have us (White Girl Lust) open up for Todd Edwards this Friday at Temple in San Francisco. For those unfamiliar, Todd has been a huge influence on our label and dance music since the early 90s. His sound is instantly recognizable, a collage of snippet samples that as a single sound make no sense, but as a collective they make for an intense but melodic soundscape. Todd is probably best known for his collaboration with Daft Punk on their single “Face to Face”. The French robots had cited Todd in their “Teachers” role call on their preceding album.  Todd’s style also played a heavy influence on the UK Garage sound, with his heavily swung beats and emphasis on basslines.

Most recently Todd has joined the ranks as a Scion A/V artist, which has allowed his profile to grow in the last year. All scholastic review aside – this is going to be awesome and we could not be more thrilled with being able to open for him. Big props to Eric Sharp at Rockit Science for consistently bringing amazing headliners.

Entry is FREE with a RSVP before 12am. $10 after. RSVP here for the hook up.

Gotta have (Ron Hardy) house music all night long.

We don’t assume that everyone should know everything about the heroes of house music. A lot of the people that started noticing the label over the last two years were not even born when this thing was starting to boil. Thus, while some of our older supporters might scoff at this sort of post – forget ‘em. It’s about the seeds here. Dance music has no chance at surviving as we love it without education. That being said…

Ron Hardy was one of the most pivotal DJ’s in the progression of house, matched only by a select few such as Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, and such. Now homeboy died in ’91 – well before anyone from Solid Bump could have possibly have been witness to what happened. But the cliff notes I have learned through years of folklore are that he was:

a) an early DJ from Chicago who had been a semi-established DJ in the pre-Knuckles era who picked up some substantial chops from Frankie after his arrival in Chi from NYC. Frankie came to front his monumental residency at the Warehouse. Notice that Knuckles was closely related to Larry Levan – thus Ron was inadvertently learning from a true source of the cutting edge and putting his own swing on their style.

b) Ron left to LA for a few years before his big break. Ron was asked to re-open the Warehouse as the Music Box after Frankie went to open the Powerhouse.

d) Ron was known for both playing much more sporadic uptempo sets than Knuckles as well as being VERY open to playing new music that made by young local producers (i.e. the burgeoning Chicago house scene). Rumor has it he would play new tapes the same night they were delivered to him from kids alongside the disco staples his crowd would expect. He is known for “breaking” a slew of house classics including “Acid Trax”.

e) he was a master at the “disco edit” when it was much harder to accomplish. He would splice tape – or by some accounts simply use tape decks to do “pause” edits. Fuck your Ableton – dude laid it down by any means necessary. His style of edit was 100% unique and can be recognized (or emulated) quickly by ear.

Ron was truly a hero in the legacy in the music we love. This post was inspired purely by a great site called Gridface who posted an interview with a kin of Ron as well as a true PLETHORA of mixes recorded live at the Music Box. I cannot stress how important of listening this is to anyone who claims to love house in ANY form. Without this man, the music would not be the same. Who knows what might have happened… but it didn’t and we have his legacy which is undeniable. Do yourself a favor and listen to a few of these mixes.

Keep in mind this was a few years after disco was “dead” – doesn’t sound dead to me…

Mix Chopin’ – FilterMania Part II Mix

Look. See that man up top? He is Mix Chopin. And I don’t think I would let him babysit. However, I’ll happily let him make DJ mixes. Below is part two in his FilterMania series. Solid Bump is aptly represented with tracks from Adulture, OCD Automatic, Ghosts of Venice, and us, White Girl Lust.

Tracklisting after the jump!

Mykill Mix Extravaganza

Lordamerci – last week Solid Bump’s Mykill, who you may recall from Pleasure & Pressure Vol.2, dropped a duo of stellar mixes on us. If that ain’t enough to raise your pants tent then this should get a rise out of you. Mykill and Meroz have been hitting the ole DAW together and apparently have some hot sh#t brewing. You can get the first taste of the team efforts on their remix of Ghosts of Venice’s “Her”.

Below is a link to the Mixcloud of Mykill’s stellar mix that he posted. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to embed this thing. If any of you strapping young lads out there know what I am doing wrong – lemme know.
