Michael Jackson Day

I’ll spare you the intro. We all know why this is up here today. This time last year SBR was just as shocked and dumb founded as the rest of the world. You didn’t have to have been a music aficionado or even just a passive listener to have been touched by the brilliance of this man.

I feel like every website in the universe will have a whole retrospect, reactions from friends, reactions from people that don’t know anything more about him than me, and people who wanna act like they knew him personally. But none of that matters at all. The bottom line is that you didn’t need to “know” him… it was something that special.

I know I am not alone with this one experience I am about to recount – I heard from a lot of people they had the same thing happen to them. One of the most memorable experiences of my life was spending that late afternoon after he died looking out my front bay window at the passing traffic. I live right off Haight St. on a bustling commuter path for pedestrians, bikers, and cars. Soon after the news broke, every few seconds a car would drive by blasting a MJ tune. People on bikes, people walking, people on stoops  – they would start singing along. People were waving at each other giving whoops of appreciation. It’s pretty rare you see people acknowledge each other at all on that street. This day it was the norm.

I’ll just share one video and one edit in commemoration. The below video Clayton from WGL sent me a few minutes after the news broke and I watch it monthly ever since. The edit comes courtesy of Think 2wice Records artist Potions. We have been playing it regularly for the last year.

Be good to each other.

Medhi + Riton = Carte Blanche Mix

JULY 2ND!! DO NOT MISS

Carte Blanche (a.k.a Mehdi & Riton) have set off the start to their North American tour and reports are flooding in that their 4 turntable, 1 Pioneer CDJ, 1 TR-909 sets are MURDERING dancefloors. Thus we could not be more hyped for the SF show July 2nd at Mezzanine.

Shane King and White Girl Lust got together and compiled a 22 minute mix featuring selected tunes from all the artist involved – just to get you a taste of what to expect. We also included the debut of the full vocal version of White Girl Lust’s remix of Ghost’s of Venice “Her” featuring Alona. She will be joining White Girl Lust that night at the end of his DJ set to debut some more forth coming tracks. Expect some extra surprises in tow for that performance.

To get tickets or more information check out www.hacksawent.com.

For now here is the mix to get you salivating for the show.

DJ Sneak – Something Old, Something New

DJ Sneak
Last week, Sneak’s Scion A/V Mix caught the ears at SBR HQ. It was stellar and just went to show that good music is back in the limelight. Around the same time we got a comment on the Roy Davis Haight Street mix we posted earlier this year from the man who procured the recording – Owen. He did a number of underground events and would often record the live sets. We are thankful he did. Many of them are archived on a site called EZE Skankin which literally serves as a time capsule for an amazing time in house music.

Here is one of our favorites from the archive.

Moonchild “Girl” – Free Download

Yesterday, a bud of Solid Bump, Moonchild a.k.a. the down under thunder, dropped his great new jam, ‘Girl’. He never let’s us down with his mixes and he definitely impressed with this track. Keep your eye out for everything with his name on it.

Fresh from Ghosts of Venice, comes this insane track ‘Sweatin’, just released in effort to help CETA – a charity in Leeds, that is striving to help a young boy named Chris receive treatment for a rare tumor he’s suffering from. All the proceeds received from this track go to the charity, so support this cause and grab what is going to be one of the hottest house tracks of the summer.

White Girl Lust- June Resident Advisor Top 10 w/Full Mix

With the help of our new homie David, we finally set up Solid Bump and White Girl Lust Resident Advisor pages. To kick it off we put together a Top 10. One thing that is lame about Top 10′s is having to track down all the songs to see if you even like them. Well, look no further, we have decided to do accompanying mixes on Soundcloud that include all the tracks.

All these tracks except the SBR exclusives are on Beatport. Support good new music and keep your eyes peeled for the ‘Her’ and ‘Paper Cat’ dropping on SBR this summer!

EMERGENCY POST!!! – Motor City Drum Ensemble live DJ set!!!

Normally we are pretty strategic in out post but… this live set from the beloved Danilo Plessow project – Motor City Drum Ensemble  just came to our attention. LISTEN. It’s that simple. Best there is at the moment.

Laberge – Casual Days

Casual Days – that is totally true. Laberge might not have a new EP but he is not slumping. Instead he is steadily feeding the internetz with a slew of new material ALL FOR FREE. If you don’t take a listen – you are a damn fool. The scat-ish vocal coupled with the uber-funky bassline is reason enough to love it… and I could come up with 1000 other reasons you should listen. It’s summer? Oh no one told San Francisco.

This is my fave Laberge track of recent days.
