For now, lets check in with Mykill himself to get a little insight as to what he is all about.

Solid Bump Records: Age & Location?
Mykill: 30 San Francisco

SBR: How did you connect with Solid Bump?
M: I had met Eric (WGL) through the local dj scene and hung out a few times but never really talked about the label.  I was dj’ing out in Phoenix one weekend and a friend of mine showed me the mix they did for XLR8R which featured the song “Blackout”.  The song got stuck in my head so I hit him up over email to ask for the track at the same time mentioning that I had been writing similar music.  After sending him some early tunes both Eric and Clay were interested in the sound I was going for and wanted to talk about putting some of it out.  We all hit it off really well and shared the same vision for the music and label, from there I was asked to be a part of the roster.

SBR: Any previous releases/ projects?
M: I’ve been dj’ing for over 13 years now and only started working on producing for the past few years but never put out anything too serious.  There are a few random edits and bootlegs out there that were posted on various blogs and featured in some mix sets.  I also did a remix for the LA hip hop group Time Machine and another LA band Jupiter Rising.

SBR: Describe your sound.
M: Funky, filtered, euphoric, disco, house.

SBR: What was your first experience with electronic music – specifically the Disco House sound?
M: For electronic dance music I started in the underground rave scene back in the mid 90′s.  Listening to mix tapes from guys like Sneak, Dj Dan, Armand Van Helden, Terry Mullan and discovering DAFT PUNK’s record HOMEWORK in 1997 really set me off to the Disco House sound.  I work as a full time club dj so I play a variety of genres but that’s the one that has always stayed close to my heart.

SBR: What are some of your major influences?
M: I’m influenced by everything and a list of bands would be just too long but as far as newer producers I’m really inspired by the younger guys like Louis La Roche, Shazam, Laberge, Le Principle and all the newer acts coming out these days.  New music is a constant source of inspiration for me.

SBR: How did this go from this musical discovery to you writing tracks?
M: I’ve always dabbled in writing music my whole life, from playing piano, guitar, and moving on to synthesizers.  Although finally sitting down and learning software was something I’ve only recently started doing over the last few years.  My experience over the last year with the label has taught me a lot as well.

SBR: How does the current “Disco House” revival distinguish itself from the style of a decade ago?
M: They are both very similar in form and substance and honestly the sound never left.   It just went to the sidelines for awhile until newer artists started pushing it again.

SBR: What is the process of a track? Where does it start? When is it done?
M: For me it’s usually listening through older records and either finding samples or hooks I can use.  From there I typically build around that and try different things.  Sometimes I’ll create multiple versions of the same song in order to see what sounds better.  Sometimes songs come together rather quickly and others can take days.  Walking away from a track and saying it’s done is a tough call because you always think you can do or add something different to it.

SBR: What attracted you to Solid Bump Records?
M: The music, the people, the vibe, the artwork, the overall package.
