Manufactured Superstars on Subliminial Records

Anyone who knows much about White Girl Lust knows that Eric used to produce/DJ/promote Drum ‘n Bass with with Shawn Sabo as D.Ecco & Sabotage on Andy C’s Frequency Records in the early 2000′s. In fact Sabo, for all intents and purposes, was essentially a part of the earliest incarnation of White Girl Lust. Soon after it started, Sabo’s day job at a young start up called Beatport (maybe you have heard of them?) got really serious. Thus he took a hiatus from producing.

I was thrilled when late last year Sabo called us up to let us know he was back in the game, rebuilding his studio (with even a few left over D.Ecco & Sabotage relics), and pushing their Manufactured Superstars brand as production alias. A few top secret collaborations may be popping up soon with Sabo and WGL.

For now though Manufactured Superstars made their remixing debut yesterday on Subliminal Records – the infamous imprint founded by Erick Morillo. It also features Frank-E, who co-produced some serious pop hits for the likes of Flo-Rida, Madonna, and more.

If you have a thing for Big Room House, definitely check out the clip below, then go cop it on Beatport.

NERD ALERT: Ski Beatz Ableton Tutorial

There is nothing I like more than a good nerd tutorial, especially one that comes with a free preset. Ableton has made leaps and bounds in the area of managing beat slices. Especially regarding the ability to make your own customizable presets. I stumbled onto this tutorial a couple months ago, then forgot to install the preset. Yesterday, Mad Decent’s in house engineer, DJA tweeted this video, which reminded me to install it. As DJA states, with this preset “you get the style of a MPC set to ‘mono’ but without hours of carefully dialing in the ADSR in live”.

Ski was the man behind many of the best tracks from Jay-Z’s debut album as well as Camp Lo’s “Luchini”. Dude knows something about chopping beats. Watch the video, then head over here to grab the preset.

Leonardus – Live Mix

We come across many demos at Solid Bump, and although we had been aware of Leonardus for some time, we recently just made contact with him. He has some stellar tracks in his pocket, and although we can’t say for sure, there is a good chance we could see a collaboration coming soon! Until then, this young producer from the Netherlands has a DJ arsenal worth admiring. Check out his recent tracklisting from his Filter Sessions Volume 15 and you will clearly see what I mean. To top it all off, he dropped some brand new Solid Bump including Laberge’s selection from the Pleasure & Pleasure Vol. 2 compilation (due March 16th) as well as an upcoming MPfree from Le Principle (WATCH THIS SPACE – THIS WEEK).

Great mix,  great tunes!

1. Sonny Fodera – Bad Connection
2. Joey Youngman – Double Stacked
3. Trevor Loveys – Feel The Horns
4. Laberge – You Won’t Regret
5. Sean Biddle – Disco Nights
6. Agent Stereo – All Night Long
7. Phoenix – If I Ever Feel Better, I’ll Go To The Disco (Buffalo Bunch Remix)
8. Bob Sinclar – I Feel For You
9. Hot Stuff – Happy Dayz Pt.2 (Jay Vegas Edit)
10. Le Principle – You Can’t fake It
11. Modjo – Chillin (Buffalo Bunch Remix)
12. Alex Herrera – LAX

Le Principle & Ghosts of Venice @ Santos NYC

Last week Le Principle & our visiting UK homie Ghosts of Venice hopped over to NYC to play the Discovery party at Santos. I had recently learned Santos was co-owned by Andrew WK. Much to my delight, my dream was answered and he was there. Not only that but Lee and Garrett did their duty, and got a picture with him. It was everything I dreamt it could be. You can check more pics from the event here.

Later that week Ghosts of Venice hopped over to play a show on Joystyxx Radio in Chicago. He even tossed in Meroz’s remix of “True Love” by Laberge on Solid Bump.

You can catch Le Principle & Ghosts of Venice at Axis in Columbus Ohio tonight and tomorrow at Trick Disco in Chicago.

NERD ALERT: Subtractive EQ – cut that sh*t out!

Every Wednesday Solid Bump lets its inner nerd shine!

Last Nerd Alert we talked about mixdown leveling. I quickly introduced the idea that to help clear space in your low end, to allow the bass and kick to hit harder, you should consider using an EQ to roll off all your non-bass/kick channels below 200hz. The idea is that all frequencies require their own space in the mix. If you have multiple noises competing for the same space, that space will become congested, and all the sounds will mask each other making the mix sound muddy or flat.

Chromeo Jammin’ Over Laberge (not really)

Okay, that is a flagrant lie, but if you listen to the 0:31 of the track P Thugg jams over, you MIGHT  notice it reminds you of Laberge’s “So Much More”. :-P

Solid Bump coast to coast this weekend!

This weekend two Solid Bump related evens are going down on separate coasts, one in NYC and on in SF. If you are out on either Coast, swing on through and slap a Solid Bump ass or two. Ghost of Venice are in from far away UK.

Trivia: Did you know Santos is co-owned by Andrew WK? Whodathink?

Nerd Alert: Mixdown Leveling – TURN IT DOWN!

Every Wednesday Solid Bump lets its inner nerd shine!

Okay, I am sure no one out there has a mixer like the one posted above – instead you are mixing in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). If you do have something like this SSL Console and you need to read this edition of the Nerd Alert then you don’t deserve it. Anyhow, when you are just starting out doing mixdowns, your natural instinct when you want to make something louder is to simply turn it up. While that makes logical sense before you know it your audio spectrum is bloated.

OCD Automatic’s Joystyxx Live Radio Mix

As a label owner, when you sign a artist who is an amazing producer, there is always a little anxiety when you first hear a DJ mix from them. Talented producers have a tendency to be a crap shoot as DJs. In turn, last week when I logged on to a Ustream set hosted by Le Principle & OCD Automatic, I was a bit nervous.

Needless to say, all my anxieties were immediately relieved. The selection was top notch, the mixing was spot on, and I was stoked. Last week OCD hit me up that he had a recorded mix. I checked it out ASAP and again, it was top quality.

If you are not hip to Le Principle & OCD Automatic’s Paper Cat, be sure to check it here. It is definitely shaping up to be a MASSIVE tune. The track is also included in the below mix along with a slew of other great tunes.
