2009 – It Was a Very Good Year

Although Solid Bump technically started in 2008, there is no doubt that 2009 is when we found our voice and vision. As awesome it has been I can’t help but let my excitement boil over for 2010.  Point blank, it will  be the year that things explode. We have a slew of tracks already signed (starting with the second installment of our label roster showcase series, Pleasure & Pressure, dropping in February), an expanded roster of some of the best up and coming talent in new disco house, and a serious drive to make the world know who we are, what we do.

Meanwhile here are some of the things that made Solid Bump worth all the blood, sweat, and tears in 2009!

Pleasure & Pressure Volume 1

To me, this was the real kick off of the vibe of the label. Although 2010 will have plenty of surprises, this introduced the foundation of sound. Funky, fun, and memorable. It was also the commercial debut of one of our favorite artist, Laberge.

Back & Forth Animated Video

Credit where credit is due. This video was Clay’s beast to tackle, tame, and unleash on the world. In classic Solid Bump style, this project was conceived and pitched as “this will be easy and fast”. It wasn’t… but the results were awesome and got a nice bit of shine for the label.

Laberge Debut EP

The Solid Bump ace in the hole of 2009. Who could resist the champagne infused groove that he conjured for the “This Feeling EP”?

White Girl Lust Live Debut

We got the opportunity to take over Vessel nightclub in San Francisco to do a one off label showcase. It came together fast and furious with little time to prepare. New signee Mykill opened up the night with a killer set of classic Disco House that led into a live set from White Girl Lust (with Clay on live bass). By 10:30 the large venue was packed – no small feat on a Wednesday night. The highlight of the set was definitely the debut of “Oui” – a song that we had just started with Alona only days earlier. Peep the youtube video of the show. The track will appear on Pleasure & Pressure as well as a single with alternative mixes in early 2010.

Laberge – Funk Music (White Girl Lust Remix)

A taste of the progression of the WGL sound. Lee from Ghost of Venice said it best, Robot Sex Music.

Writing this post got me hyped for the new year. It’s insane what we have in store and in the next few weeks we will be making some announcements. Trust me, you’ll want to stay tuned!

A X-Mas Miracle – Amazing Free Drum Samples

Tonight I was doing a bootleg edit (something WGL has not done in AGES) and my hi hat choices were making me vomit eggnog. Thankfully we have google in your lives and I came across a free Christmas gift from the internet of some amazing Logic EXS24 Live Drum kits (they will work in Ableton as well). My gift to you is the gift that was given to me.

The first is from Sam Greene. The second is from Bransin Anderson. They both are multi-sampled, sound AMAZING and are totally free.

Merry nondenominational day!

Remaking Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up”

I love this trend of people showing how to remake classic tracks. Makes it look so easy. Thanks to Stretch Armstrong re-tweeting Nadastrom re-tweeting Riva Starr for this one.

Nerd Alert Wednesday! Interview with Our Mastering Engineer.

We met Shawn Hatfield (owner of Audible Oddities and main engineer) when we were wrapping up our first EP. He came recommended from some friends and I was thrilled when he lived in the same nieghborhood as me. Since then he has been a huge asset to Solid Bump, assisting in helping us balance making our tracks hit in club while not making them brickwalls of compresssed noise (see our post about this problem). He has stopped by my home studio to make suggestions on problematic mixdowns. All in all an awesome and incredibly helpful resource.

So what is a audio enginner? What do they do? Why should you not just do it yourself with your VST plug-ins? Shawn was cool enough to answer some questions for us. Sit down and put on your thinking cap… Audible Oddities will be dropping knowledge jewels.

Solid Bump Curated – “merchandise to make you cool”

Since the holidays are getting rolling I decided to take a minute to pick some of my favorite new products made by SBR homies.

First up is 15min’s line of Star Trek Necklaces.

Denver designer Samuel Shcimek has a line of Re-Purposed Jewelry (99% Recycled Art) that is probably suitable for a wednesday nerd alert post.  I played the gallery show of these necklaces and as a bonus I have a wicked green Klingon Vorsak class cruiser on a gold dookie chain (yeah that’s right nerds) The necklaces are unisex, 99% green, and mega affordable. Visit the 15 min store for these and more recycled design goods!

C’mon you know you want to see your girl with the Enterprise D on her chest.

Next up,

Ashi Dashi Socks!

I did a post about Ashi Dashi’s “prismo” socks a couple months back.  The socks are all american made  and in limited edition runs.  Check out the “half hearted” model socks, get 2 pairs for you and yours to play footsy with by the fire.  View the whole line, or buy the pictured “Emil Kozak Mixed Graphics” pair  at Ashi Dashi’s store.

Every  pair of socks needs a good pair of sneaks to keep them safe…

Which brings me to Lorinza Sneakers.

I was in Tokyo a few years back visiting my cousin who was living in Hara-Juku.  One of our main hangouts was a boutique called “DOG” owned by our friend Yuusake.  Yuusake has kept the dream alive and now has his own clothing / fashion line.  Lorinza teamed up with Emerica (Emerica’s first partnership with a fashion company) to bring you these stylin’ lace ups.   Get them here at Yuusake’s online shop.

Finally nothing says “I’m fresh and 30″ like a screen printed Typeface T-shirt from Ugmonk.

74 + 26 = 100

Ugmonk is the product of Vermont designer Jeffery Sheldon.  I don’t know this company personally but I bought his “& then i woke up” shirt last week and wear it nearly every other day.  My Ugmonk shirt is soon to be the only piece of clothing I have as stinky as my Nudie jeans.

White Girl Lust Discobelle Mix

Yesterday I took a break from mixing down a new track to look at our web stats. I was surprised that our Discobelle mix from almost 2 years ago still gets a couple hundred hits a week. I was happy because hands down this is my favorite mix we ever have done.

Full tracklist and original commentary on the selection after the jump.

Nerd Alert Wednesday – RiP! A Remix Manifesto

RiP! A Remix Manifesto

Copyright law. It’s a pain in most electronic musician’s asses. I remember as a kid discovering the samples used in my fave Hip-Hop songs and being so excited – like discovering a little secret. I also remember when Biz Markie got sued and the whole game changed. Nowadays due to copyright law, a lot of the classic albums of the late 80s could never be made (It Takes a Nation of Millions for example). There would just be no way to license every sample they used.

That being said, it is appropriate that this documentary focuses on Girl Talk. I always wondered how this fellow put out these albums of 2000+ samples of popular songs and not get destroyed by lawsuits. I always assumed he had some sort of influential family in high places or something.

This documentary dives into copyright law and how it changed over the last couple decades under the pressure of big business like Disney. It is fairly naive in it’s presentation at times, almost like 30+ years of rap music never happened and Girl Talk and Negativland are the first people to ever slice a beat. But for every infuriatingly dumb thing said about music, you can learn a little something about copyright. And if you are an aspiring producer you prolly should.

Delancey Music Service – East Village Radio

Delancey Music Service Show Nov. 30th

There is a slew of podcast & radio shows out there… but this one holds a spot in my heart. Back in the early-90′s I would spend about 4 weeks of summer in New York. The highlight of that time was hearing DJs on the radio. There was Funkmaster Flex and Evil Dee on Hot 97 and then there was a more obscure show that didn’t make as much sense to my little brain… Stretch and Bobbito. You can actually skim archives of the old shows here.

Well, Stretch is still very active in music, heading up Plant Music as well as a new show on East Village Radio with Eli Escobar (who I used to enjoy listening to when he would fill in for Mark Ronson’s show). He also happens to be a stellar producer/ dj. The selection fits perfect with the Solid Bump sound and we were thrilled that Stretch dropped a White Girl Lust joint in the set last week.

Highly recommended listening – stream it here…

Mike 2600 – Ready To Rock EP

Solid Bump has a lot of e-pals, meaning people that we feel like we know from trading tracks, hustling promos, and such – but have never met in the analog world. Hell, to this day Clay and I have not met Laberge. Another such person was Mike 2600. He has always been a great supporter of what we have been doing… but I had never actually met him until last August when he was cool enough to request that WGL support a night with himself and B.Cause at Madrone.

The night was filled to the brim with quality music and it was nothing but good party vibes. Mike mentioned he was working on some new music. Late last week I was pumped to see a promo of his new EP from the good folks at Crossfaded Bacon. The EP is exactly how Mike 2600 DJ sets sound. Classic but fresh, blurring the lines between disco, funk, and old school rap – just like how the real world was in 1981.
